Chinese Alligator
The Chinese Alligator is found close to the lower Yangtze River although it is endangered in the wild owing to habitat destruction and indirect poisoning through eating poisoned rats. Whereas there are only around 200 in the wild, there are around 10,000 in captivity such as here at the Santa Barbara Zoo.
It is much smaller than the American alligator but is much more armoured with an armoured belly which is unusual for crocodilians.
