Indonesian archipelago

They have venom in their venom glands and the toxic bacteria in them leaves traces of the flesh (prey). And it causes the wounds to become quickly infected. They can run fast up to 11mph and it can even kill human, when kept captive or in a case of close contact.
Their breeding season comes in September, and the females lay up to 30 eggs, and after 8 month they start to hatch. They venture up to trees which they spend more time until they grow big enough to live in the ground.











These dragons are listed as vulnerable species in IUCN red list. Even they are huge predators in the wild, humans have pose a threat to them .The urbanization, deforestation and also hunting of these species are known to be the biggest threats for their extinction .So let’s protect them by doing the right thing.

Description

The Komodo Dragon is a large species of lizard and known to be the heaviest lizards on earth. It’s species of Monitor Lizard that has been evolving in island isolation for millions years, which has led to it becoming very large indeed. And it’s also one of the most aggressive and powerful species in hunt. Komodo Dragon is able to “taste” scent particles in the air to locate both live and dead prey. It has a good eyesight and poses almighty tail used in fighting. It’s also has a small head and sharp, long claws. They are solitary animals and they are well adapted for camouflage with their greyish body color. They walk waving their head, covering big circles in ground with their feet which gives them an elegance look. In hunt they remain with patience until the prey passes. They can track its prey using their keen sense of smell.

Distribution

These dragons are known to be living only in Indonesian archipelago. And most of them are protected in the Komodo National park which is in Indonesia. They live off the villages but the distribution of villages have made to come to the villages for the search of food .The Indonesian culture see these animals as an ancestral form. These animals acts very actively in the ground as well as in the water. Their known to be good swimmers which allows them travel great distances.
