Saola

Description

Saolas  are one of the most  large mammals in the world but are now also believed to be one of the rarest with estimated population numbers .And they are one of the most distinctive Antelope species  in the world.They have special horns that sit  parallel on top of the its head.their colour ranges from chestnut brown, to red, to almost black. And they also have a small fluffy tail.The have dark narrow strip running along their back to their tail.They have a thick skin which protect them from being injured form the other individuals horns.And they have a thin,soft fur covers their body and it helps them to be warm in winter. seasons The face has striking white markings, including a stripe above each eye. This band of colour continues to their tail. Male Saola are thought to be highly territorial and are believed to mark their territory using a sticky, smelly liquid which is secreted from their large maxillary glands. Saolas are herbivore mammals that feed on leaves of trees and bushes grows near river banks​.And also they fed on fruits, flowers, seed and herbs grow on the ground.

Distribution

They are discovered to science in 1992 , but they are very rare ,and we are responsible for the situation in the present.  And saolas are commonly found in evergreen forest tat have a good source of water ,also moist forests They're known to be near the border between central Vietnam and Laos.

Their breeding season starts in the rainy seasons which is around February-March in Vietnam and between April-June in Laos. And a single-calf is born .They are listed as critically Endangered in the IUCN red list. They're pushed them away from their natural environment ,and fast urbanization made them hard to survive. The researchers have proved that they can't survive in captivity. And their life span is known to be around 8-11 years in the wild.












Hunting for their horns which are prized trophy amongst locals. And predation, habitat loss through deforestation have pose a big threat to the species. They are protected in some forest but yet ,decrease of the threats aren't recorded. So we can take actions for these animals and can stand up for the nature.
